Asymmetry of the Mental Foramen

Aim: The locatiun of mental foramen has been reported for various ethnical groups in various positions. During injections and other operative procedures, the repeated failures of getting into the mental foramen suggest presence of a asymmetry or an anatomical variation. The aim of the present study is to investigate the possible foramen mentale asymmetry. Methods: The present investigation is based on the examination of 37 adult mandibles. Asymmetry was determined as to the relations of the mental foramen to the lower teeth Results: In our study, the foramen was found in 4 different positions. The most common position of the foramen was in line with the vertical axis of the second premolar tooth (position-IV). Conclusion: It appears that the variation of the mental foramen is a result of asymmetry commonly found in the human body. The location of the foramen may also reflect ethnical differences. Prior to the surgery, the knowledge of the most common location of the foramen peculiar to the population might provide effective mental block anaesthesia.

Foramen Mentale Asimetrisi

Amaç: Foramen mentale çeşitli toplumsal gruplarlarda farklı pozisyonlarda bulunmuştur. Diğer yandan, foramen’e yönelik cerrahi ve lokal anestezi uygulamalarında tekrar eden başarısızlıklar görülmesi muhtemel bir asimetrinin varlığını düşündürmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, foramen mentale asimetrisini araştırmaktır. Metot: Çalışmamızda 37 yetişkin mandibula kemiği kullanıldı. Asimetri, foramen’in alt çene dişleri ile olan ilişkisine göre değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Çalışmamızda foramen mentale dört ayrı pozisyonda bulundu. Foramen, ayrıca en çok ikinci premolar diş hizasında görüldü (pozisyon-IV). Sonuç: Foramen mentale varyasyonları insan vücudunda mevcut olan asimetri sonucu gibi görünmektedir. Foramen’in yeri toplumlara göre değişiklik gösterebilir. Çene anestezisini gerektiren uygulamalarda bu durum dikkate alınmalıdır.
